One of the oldest continuously operating fine jewelry houses, Chaumet was founded in 1780 by Marie-Étienne Nitot, who had worked for the jeweler to Queen Marie Antoinette before establishing his own Maison. During Napoleon I's reign, Nitot was appointed Imperial court jeweler and soon developed an ardent following among Europe's elite. Control of the Maison passed through various hands, and after Joseph Chaumet became Director in 1885, he changed the company's name and moved it to the historic address of 12, Place Vendôme, where the high jewelry workshop, heritage collection, and flagship boutique still stand. While Chaumet's Belle Epoque, Art Deco, and Mid-Century creations are especially admired, the Maison's emphasis on hand made virtuosity has remained unchanged throughout its 240+ year history.
