Rubel Retro moonstone and ruby man on the moon pins
Rubel Retro moonstone and ruby man on the moon pins
A pair of Retro tri-color gold man on the moon brooches designed as pierrot clown figures with ruby bead heads sitting on a crescent moon set with graduated moonstones, in 14k. Attributed to Rubel.
Rubel Frères was a Parisian jewelry workshop established by Jean and Robert Rubel in 1915 after they emigrated to France from Hungary. As experienced jewelers with exceptionally fine quality craftsmanship, their work was sought after by numerous prestigious jewelry houses. Their most notable collaboration was with Van Cleef & Arpels, which lasted twenty years and ended in 1943 when the brothers opened their own firm - John Rubel & Co. - at 777 Fifth Ave., NYC.
These fanciful brooches were made during the 1940s when American and French jewelers were experimenting with colorful figural pieces set with gemstones in unexpected combinations and attractive, contrasting colors.
