Retro Belperron Torsade ring
A Retro "Torsade" ring of tapering reeded design with a central panel of pavé diamonds, in platinum and 18k gold. Suzanne Belperron, France. Maker's mark for Groëné et Darde. Atw 2.50 cts. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Olivier Baroin.
Considered to be among the most important independent jewelry designers of the twentieth-century, Suzanne Belperron was born in 1900 in the picturesque town of Saint-Claude in eastern France near the Swiss border. After finishing her studies at an art school in Saint-Claude, she moved to Paris where she began working at the well-known jewelry house of Boivin. Suzanne's work at Boivin was very much ahead of its time, championing curvilinear and streamlined pieces which were unlike the diamond-embellished geometric Art Deco pieces being widely produced during the 1920s and early ‘30s. Upon leaving Boivin in 1932, she partnered with a Parisian jeweler - Bernard Herz - where she continued to produce her avant garde designs but this time with full autonomy. She quickly became a tastemaker in Parisian society and beyond, creating jewels for royalty, actresses, artists, and other high-profile figures. She never signed her work, instead often saying, “My style is my signature.”
